The Americas were only one area of the world in which people built pyramids. For information on the pyramids of Egypt, see Pyramids (Egypt). Some American pyramids served as royal tombs, while others were built for military defense and as platforms for temples and palaces. Most were constructed between about 1200 BC and the AD 700s, and construction continued until the Spanish conquest of Central and South America in the 1500s. After that, native civilizations in the region declined. Most of the pyramids that survive today are in Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Peru.

Several groups of peoples—including the Olmec, Moche, Teotihuacanos, Maya, Toltec, and Aztec—built pyramids in the Americas. Their societies centered on great religious complexes, which sometimes constituted cities. Within these complexes, the pyramids were the dominant structures. In the biggest cities—such as Copán in Honduras, Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacán in Mexico, and Quiriguá and Tikal in Guatemala—vast complexes of pyramids were built around courts or plazas. In Copán, Quiriguá, and other sites, the builders put up huge artificial hills on which they constructed terraces, sunken courts, and pyramids.

The pyramids of the Americas generally are not as tall as those of Egypt, but a few extend over a larger area. For example, the Grand Pyramid at Cholula in central Mexico is 62 m (203 ft) tall, and its base covers about 16 hectares (40 acres). The base is about three times the area covered by the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt. And more pyramids were built in the Americas than in Egypt. About 90 pyramids are known to have existed in Egypt, whereas several hundred small pyramids are scattered across Central and South America.

Unlike the pyramids of Egypt, the American pyramids rarely contain inner chambers or burial vaults. Often, the interior is simply a mound of rubble. But their exterior construction is much more complex. They generally have terraces, and most were originally faced with cut white limestone set in lime mortar. A temple sat atop most American pyramids. This temple tended to be a small windowless room of stone or adobe. A broad stairway led up the front of the pyramid to the temple. Scholars believe that only priests climbed the temple stairways, and that during religious ceremonies at the temple, crowds of onlookers assembled in the plaza below. In some cultures, the temple was the site of sacrificial rites, after which the victim's body was flung down the stairway.

Terraced stone pyramids were built in Peru as early as 3000 BC in the Norte Chico region. Later cultures in Peru constructed even larger pyramids, including a complex at Las Haldas dated to 1800 BC. The Olmec built the first large-scale pyramid complex in 1200 BC at La Venta in southeastern Mexico. Pyramid building stopped after Spanish conquistadors(conquerors) arrived in Central and South America in the AD 1500s. The most famous surviving pyramids of the Americas include the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacán, and the Huaca del Sol in Moche, Peru.

Jet aircraft make use of turbines for the creation of thrust. These engines are much more powerful than a reciprocating engine. As a consequence, they have greater weight capacity and fly faster than propeller driven aircraft. One drawback, however, is that they are noisy; this makes jet aircraft a source of noise pollution. However, turbofan jet engines are quieter, and they have seen widespread usage partly for that reason.

The jet aircraft was developed in Germany in 1931. The first jet was the Heinkel He 178, which was tested at Germany's Marienehe Airfield in 1939. In 1943 the Messerschmitt Me 262, the first jet fighter aircraft, went into service in the German Luftwaffe. In the early 1950s, only a few years after the first jet was produced in large numbers, the De Havilland Comet became the world's first jet airliner. However, the early Comets were beset by structural problems discovered after numerous pressurization and depressurization cycles, leading to extensive redesigns.

Most wide-body aircraft can carry hundreds of passengers and several tons of cargo, and are able to travel for distances up to 17,000 km. Aircraft in this category are the Boeing 747, Boeing 767, Boeing 777, the upcoming Boeing 787 and Airbus A380 , Airbus A300/A310, Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Airbus A380, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, McDonnell Douglas DC-10, McDonnell Douglas MD-11, Ilyushin Il-86, and Ilyushin Il-96.

Jet aircraft possess high cruising speeds (700 to 900 km/h, or 400 to 550 mph) and high speeds for take-off and landing (150 to 250 km/h). Due to the speed needed for takeoff and landing, jet aircraft make use of flaps and leading edge devices for the control of lift and speed, as well as thrust reversers to direct the airflow forward, slowing down the aircraft upon landing.


Supersonic jet aircraft

Supersonic aircraft, such as military fighters and bombers, Concorde, and others, make use of special turbines (often utilizing afterburners), that generate the huge amounts of power for flight faster than the speed of the sound. Flight at supersonic speed creates more noise than flight at subsonic speeds, due to the phenomenon of sonic booms. This limits supersonic flights to areas of low population density or open ocean. When approaching an area of heavier population density, supersonic aircraft are obliged to fly at subsonic speed.

Due to the high costs, limited areas of use and low demand there are no longer any supersonic aircraft in use by any major airline. The last Concorde flight was on 26 November 2003.


An aircraft is said to be 'unmanned' when there is no person in the cockpit of the plane. The aircraft is controlled only by remote controls or other electronic devices.

Experimental rocket powered aircraft were developed by the Germans as early as World War II (see Me 163 Komet), and about 29 were manufactured and deployed. The first fixed wing aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight was a rocket plane- the Bell X-1. The later North American X-15 was another important rocket plane that broke many speed and altitude records and laid much of the groundwork for later aircraft and spacecraft design. Rocket aircraft are not in common usage today, although rocket-assisted takeoffs are used for some military aircraft. SpaceShipOne is the most famous current rocket aircraft, being the testbed for developing a commercial sub-orbital passenger service; another rocket plane is the XCOR EZ-Rocket; and there is of course the Space Shuttle.

A ramjet is a form of jet engine that contains no major moving parts and can be particularly useful in applications requiring a small and simple engine for high speed use, such as missiles. The D-21 Tagboard was an unmanned Mach 3+ reconnaissance drone that was put into production in 1969 for spying, but due to the development of better spy satellites, it was cancelled in 1971. The SR-71's Pratt & Whitney J58 engines ran 80% as ramjets at high speeds (Mach 3.2). The SR-71 was dropped at the end of the Cold War, then brought back during the 1990s. They were used also in the Gulf War. The last SR-71 flight was in October 2001.


Scramjet aircraft


Scramjet aircraft are in the experimental stage. The Boeing X-43 is an experimental scramjet with a world speed record for a jet-powered aircraft - Mach 9.7, nearly 12,000 km/h (≈ 7,000 mph) at an altitude of about 36,000 meters (≈ 110,000 ft). The X-43A set the flight speed record on 16 November 2004.

A flying wing is a fixed-wing aircraft which has no definite fuselage, with most of the crew, payload and equipment being housed inside the main wing structure.[1]

A flying wing may have various small protuberances such as pods, nacelles, blisters, booms, vertical stabilisers (tail fins), or undercarriage. Some aircraft have no fuselage but do have a separate horizontal stabiliser surface mounted on one or more booms; these are also commonly referred to as flying wings, although this is not strictly correct. An example of such a design is the Northrop X216H[2].

Theoretically the flying wing is the most efficient aircraft configuration from the point of view of aerodynamics and structural weight. It is argued that the absence of any aircraft components other than the wing should naturally provide these benefits. However in practice an aircraft's wing must provide for flight stability and control; this imposes additional constraints on the aircraft design problem. Therefore, the expected gains in weight and drag reduction may be partially or wholly negated due to design compromises needed to provide stability and control. Alternatively, and more commonly, a flying wing type may suffer from stability and control problems.

Tailless aircraft have been experimented with since Man's earliest attempts to fly. But it was not until the deep-chord monoplane wing became practicable after World War I that the opportunity to discard any form of fuselage arose and the true flying wing could be realised.

Hugo Junkers patented a wing-only air transport concept in 1910. He saw it as a natural solution to the problem of building an airliner large enough to carry a reasonable passenger load and enough fuel to cross the Atlantic in regular service. He believed that flying wing's potentially large internal volume and low drag made it "a natural" for this role, In 1919 he started work on his "Giant" JG1 design, intended to seat passengers within thick wings, but two years later the Allied Aeronautical Commission of Control ordered the incomplete JG1 destroyed for exceeding post-war size limits on German aircraft. Junkers conceived futuristic flying wings for up to 1,000 passengers; the nearest this came to realization was in the 1931 Junkers G-38 34-seater Grossflugzeug airliner which featured a large thick-chord wing providing space for fuel, engines and two passenger cabins. However it still required a short fuselage ending in a double tail, and containing the crew and additional passengers.

The flying wing configuration was studied extensively in the 1930s and 1940s, notably by Jack Northrop and Cheston L. Eshelman in the United States, and Alexander Lippisch and the Horten brothers in Germany.

Early examples of true flying wings include:
The German Horten H1 glider flown with partial success in 1933, and the subsequent H2 flown successfully in both glider and powered variants.
The American Freel Flying Wing glider flown in 1937.
The American Northrop N-1M of 1940.
The British Baynes Bat glider of 1943.

Several late-war German military designs were based on the flying wing concept (or variations of it) as a proposed solution to extend the range of the otherwise very short-range jet engined aircraft. Most famous of these would be the Horten Ho 229 fighter. This aircraft, first flown in 1944, combined a flying wing, or Nurflügel, design with twin jet engines. The surviving prototype remains in storage with the Smithsonian Institute in an unrestored state.

After the war, a number of experimental designs were based on the flying wing concept, but the known difficulties remained intractable. Some general interest continued until the early 1950s, when the concept was proposed as a design solution for long range bombers. Such trends culminated in the Northrop YB-35 and YB-49, which did not enter production. Those designs did not necessarily offer a great advantage in range and presented a number of technical problems, leading to the adoption of "conventional" solutions like the Convair B-36 and the B-52 Stratofortress.

Interest in flying wings was renewed in the 1980s due to their potentially low radar reflection cross-sections. Stealth technology relies on shapes which only reflect radar waves in certain directions, thus making the aircraft hard to detect unless the radar receiver is at a specific position relative to the aircraft - a position that changes continuously as the aircraft moves. This approach eventually led to the Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. In this case the aerodynamic advantages of the flying wing are not the primary needs. However, modern computer-controlled fly-by-wire systems allowed for many of the aerodynamic drawbacks of the flying wing to be minimized, making for an efficient and stable long-range bomber.

Due to the practical need for a deep wing, the flying wing concept is most practical for designs in the slow-to-medium speed range, and there has been continual interest in using it as a tactical airlifter design. Boeing continues to work on paper projects for a Blended Wing Body Lockheed C-130 Hercules sized transport with better range and about 1/3rd more load, while maintaining the same size characteristics. A number of companies, including Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and de Havilland did considerable design work on flying-wing airliners, but to date none have entered production.

The Ancient Coin.

One day a beggar was sitting on the sidewalk as usual.Then came a thief and he stole the beggar's 20$ that he got.The beggar had a family and wife would trash him to death if he doesn't bring any thing to eat,so he worked over time.It was very cold and dark so he fell asleep.Then a gang of bullies came and carried him to a near by beach and dumped him in the water.Some how an ancient coin got stuck in his pocket.The next day some fishermen found him and brought to a hospital,when he got better he found a coin in his pocket the doctor saw the coin and offered 200$ for it,the beggar sold it and got 200$.For the 200$ he bought some food and clothes.And 20$ were left and he bought a lottery and he got it.So because of a thief a beggar became a millionaire.

PROJECT TITLE:Water Purification


Water Purification

Aim:
To purify muddy water by filtration, sedimentation and chemical treatment.



Materials Required:
1. Muddy river water
2. Alum
3. Two beakers
4. Filter stand
5. Glass funnel
6. Filter paper
7. Glass rod
8. Two tall jars




Procedure:




Pour the muddy water in the beaker for some time to settle. Fold a filter paper in four stages as shown in the diagram. Place it in the glass funnel. You will see it does not stick to the funnel. One or two drops of water will make it stick. Now using a glass rod, pour the muddy water through the filter and see what happens. Collect the water that passes through in a beaker. This is called the filtrate. Pour the filtrate which, you will see, still contains tiny particles in suspension, into two tall jars. To one jar add some powdered potash alum, leave the other for comparison.


Observation:

Notice the change when the muddy water is first allowed to settle ? What change do you notice after filtration as well as after potash alum is added ? Note if there any difference between the water in the two jars.


Inference:

In this experiment you will have noticed the removal of suspended particles in water in three stages leaving a perfectly clear water. This is not necessarily pure, as bacteria, if present, cannot be seen with the naked eye, and they are so small that they cannot be removed by filtration.

3. Adhesive cement





Procedure:




To make an Anti-Gravity Machine that seems to work against gravity. When the machine placed at the bottom of a sloping track, it appears to run uphill against gravity. The machine is a double cone, easily made from two plastic funnels. Use adhesive cement to stick their rims together. The sloping track is cut from cardboard, which has to be adjusted to get the slope just right, since the gradient will depend on the size of the funnels. Place the track so the two sides are about an inch apart at the lower end, with a width at the other end equal to the length of the double funnels. When the funnels are placed at the bottom of this track, it rolls to the top. This is because as the funnels appear to move up, the increasing width of the track lowers the funnels so that its centre of gravity actually becomes lower.

Materials Required:
1. Heavy cardboard

Procedure:


From a piece of heavy cardboard cut a small L-shaped boomerang. The ends of the boomerang should be rounded as shown. Hold it at one end and throw it upwards at an inclination. The boomerang will then 1whirl forward and up and then glide back toward you along the same path. The spin of the boomerang is essential to its working as it converts the cardboard into a simple gyroscope. As long as the spin continues it will maintain the same plane of rotation. The force of air on the rotating ends and inclined blades pushes the boomerang back.

3. Rubber band

Procedure:


Stretch a rubber band around the sides of a wooden box. Then cut out a arrow from the piece of cardboard and, mount it on a pin, and push the pin under the rubber band. If you now bring a burning match or candle close to the rubber band, the cardboard arrow will rotate anti-clockwise. Move the flame near the other end and the arrow rotates clockwise. The heat causes a portion of the band to contract, rotating the pin and arrow. This is because rubber contracts when heated and expands when cooled
